Bio:

Samuel D. Kiser, P.E., FAWS
Director of Technology
Special Metals Welding Products Company

 

Mr. Kiser received his BSME from the University of Cincinnati in 1969 and has been employed by INCO Alloys International, now Special Metals Corporation, over the last 41 years. Until 1985, Mr. Kiser worked in the Huntington, West Virginia metallurgical and welding laboratories and in technical service and marketing. In 1985, he became Product Manager for the comprehensive nickel alloy welding product portfolio of INCO Alloys International and relocated to Newton, North Carolina where he performed various managerial functions before becoming Director of Technology in 2002. As technical director, Mr. Kiser is responsible for directing welding research and development programs, directing acceptance testing, and providing commercial and manufacturing technical support. He is also responsible for the content and performance of the acclaimed “Welding Forum”, a classic welding engineering training program, which draws attendees from around the world and has been in existence for over sixty years.
Over the past 35 years, Mr. Kiser has been involved in all aspects of welding research and metallurgy where nickel alloys are involved and his efforts have resulted in eleven patents (with two more pending) that cover four industries. He is also responsible for numerous trade secrets in use today in nickel alloy products. This includes applications welding research in modern cast irons where he holds two current patents. Other areas of research have resulted in patents for welding products used in nuclear applications and in steel making. He has authored more than 200 technical articles, book chapters, and technical monographs. Mr. Kiser has presented over 170 lectures for The American Welding Society, The American Society for Metals, The Canadian Welding Society, NACE, TAPPI, and The Indian Institute of Welding. Additionally, he has lectured in China, Mexico, Japan, and throughout Europe. He has also served on the AWS D-11 committee and on the nickel alloys chapter of the Handbook committee. He also served as Chairman of A-5J committee and was Chapter Chairman for the Eighth Edition of the AWS Handbook for Dissimilar Metals Welding and Welding Cast Irons. Mr. Kiser continues in a consulting role to various welding manufacturing groups as well as research groups throughout the world.
Mr. Kiser is a member of AWS-TAC, A5E, and A5 committees. He has received the AWS Samuel Wylie Miller Award, the AWS A.F. Davis Silver Medal Award, and became a fellow of AWS in 2004. Most recently, in 2009, he was co-author of the Wiley book entitled “Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Nickel-Base Alloys” with Dr. John N. Dupont and Dr. John C. Lippold.
