In the latest edition of AWS QC1:2007 (Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors) provides the following information on 9-Year Recertification for SCWI and CWI: 

16.5.2   PDHs (Professional Development Hours) may be earned by attending local section meetings of a professional society (AWS and other) where technical presentations are given which cover one or more of the areas indicated in AWS B5.1, Specification for Qualification of Welding Inspectors.
